Non-Governmental Organisations

As per the Non- Governmental Organisations Act Cap 315, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) is define as  a legal entity formed as a company limited by guarantee under the Belize Companies Act No 11 of 2022, whose aims, nature and objects, direct or indirect, are consistent with the principles enshrined in the preamble to the Belize Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and all those international and regional human rights treaties and instruments to which Belize is a party, and are designed to contribute to sustainable human development in Belize.

Requirements to Register a NGO in Belize:

  1. Incorporate a Company limited by guarantee via OBRS. Note: To ensure availability of the Company Name-you may conduct a search of existing names in the previous registry systemand current Registry system, OBRS. You can also reserve a name in OBRS for free for up to 10 days. There are prohibited words for Companies. View a listing of prohibited words.
  2. Articles/By-laws of a Company/NGO
  3. Social Security ID of Company Participants (members, directors) Note: If participants are non- Belizeans or do not hold a valid Social Security ID,  a Registered Agent must be used to incorporate the company.
  4. Principal Address of Company and participants
  5.  NGO Profile (to be uploaded in OBRS) including:
      • The name and address of the Non-Governmental Organisation.
      • Brief details of the aims, objects, and purposes of the Non-Governmental Organisation, especially those relating to sustainable human development in Belize.
      • The organisational structure of the Non-Governmental Organisation (including without limitation details of its membership and management) and how its Directors are elected, their duties and powers, and terms of office.
      • The accounting and management procedures of the Non-Governmental Organisation.
      • The names, addresses, and occupations of each member of the Board of Directors of the Non-Governmental Organisation for each year, where applicable.
      • The types of programmes that the Non-Governmental Organisation intends to carry out for that year.

     

Note: Under the Belize Companies Act No. 11 of 2022, it is mandatory for all companies to carry a suffixes.
