OBRS Cybersecurity Incident FAQs

BCCAR identified unauthorized access to the Online Business Registry System (OBRS) on August 4, 2026, during routine system maintenance. As a precautionary measure, access to OBRS was temporarily taken offline on August 5th  while cybersecurity specialists investigate the incident, secure the system and assess its full scope and potential impact.

BCCAR identified the unauthorized access on August 4, 2026. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full timeline and circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation is ongoing and is examining the circumstances that allowed the unauthorized access to occur. BCCAR is working with cybersecurity specialists to determine the root cause and identify any necessary security improvements.

BCCAR took immediate steps to restrict access to OBRS and temporarily disabled the system while the incident was assessed and additional security measures were implemented.

OBRS has now been restored following system-recovery and testing activities.

However, the restoration of OBRS DOES NOT conclude the investigation. BCCAR continues to assess the incident and will communicate additional verified information as it becomes available.

BCCAR’s preliminary review indicates no compromise of the OBRS database, servers or administrative accounts.. BCCAR’s investigation is ongoing. At this stage, BCCAR has confirmed that documents were downloaded during the period of unauthorized access.

BCCAR continues to assess the incident and will provide additional verified information as it becomes available.

Unauthorized access was gained to application documents and documents available through information services. The identified documents have been marked with a solid warning icon in  OBRS so that relevant users can identify them. BCCAR wishes to emphasize that there is no evidence that any marked document was amended or deleted, and the warning designation does not affect the document’s validity.

The affected areas involve application documents and documents made available through OBRS information services.

Documents identified as having been downloaded during the period of unauthorized access have been marked in OBRS with a solid warning icon .

Users can view these marked documents under the “Attachments” section of the relevant Application or Register Record.

The solid warning icon indicates that the document was identified as having been downloaded during the period of unauthorized access.

The icon is intended to help users identify documents that were affected by the unauthorized access.

No. BCCAR has no evidence that any marked document was amended or deleted.

The warning designation only indicates that the document was identified as having been downloaded during the period of unauthorized access.

No. The warning designation does not affect the validity of the document.

Users who identify a marked document should review BCCAR’s Cybersecurity Incident Update page and Frequently Asked Questions for the latest guidance.

If you have questions concerning a specific marked document, you may contact BCCAR through the official contact channels.

At this stage, BCCAR’s investigation has found no evidence that official Registry records were amended, deleted or otherwise altered.

As part of the restoration process, BCCAR implemented additional security measures and completed system-recovery and testing activities.

BCCAR continues to monitor the system and review its security measures as the investigation progresses.

As part of the restoration process, BCCAR has introduced additional security measures, including:

  • A temporary limit of 100 document views or downloads per user per hour; and
  • The temporary disablement of passport-based registration for limited public user accounts.

These measures will remain under review and may be adjusted as necessary.

No. The restoration of OBRS does not conclude the investigation.

BCCAR continues to assess the incident and will communicate additional verified information as it becomes available.
